Professor Zhang is currently a fellow of Plant of Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Macau and a enquiry associate at the University of Chicago.

He has reviewed books and articles which were published past various publishers, including Columbia University Press, Harvard University Press, China Publishing House 中華書局, and Prc Social Sciences Press 中國社會科學出版社. He is a Guest Editor for Journal of Chinese Humanities (Scopus index; published by Brill).

Professor Zhang has been a visiting scholar or swain at Princeton University, Harvard University, Stanford University, University of Chicago, Academy of Michigan at Ann Arbor, the Library of Congress, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Fudan University for diverse external research grants and fellowships. He has also contributed to several government-sponsored research projects in the U.Southward., Canada, and Cathay, including projects sponsored by the U.S. National Scientific discipline Foundation, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), and the Chinese National Fundamental Programme in Humanities and Social Sciences 國家社科基金重大項目. Professor Zhang was the recipient of FAH Excellence in Research Laurels in 2021.

Professor Zhang's research focuses on classical Chinese literature, specifically the verse of the Six Dynasties period (220–589) and recent developments in Sinology both in Mainland china and the Anglophone world. He has recently published or forthcoming three books (2 sole-authored books and ane edited volume): Lore and Poesy: Poems on History in Early Medieval Cathay (State University of New York Printing, 2021) sunypress.edu/Books/Fifty/Lore-and-Poetry, Recent Research in Sinology and Classical Chinese Literary Studies 晚近漢學與中國古代文學研究 (forthcoming with Peking Academy Press 北京大學出版社), and The Interrelation betwixt Verse and History in Medieval Chinese Literature 中古文學中的詩與史 (Fudan University Printing 復旦大學出版社, 2020).
